Thermochemical Process for Utilization of Gypsum and Pyrite Wastes
نویسنده
چکیده
combustion flue gas desulfurization (FGD) using lime or limestone are the primary processes employed to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emission from coal combustion. However, these processes generate voluminous solid wastes, i.e., pyrite and gypsum, that are usually landfilled, occupying thousands of acres of land and creating serious land and water pollution problems due to the release of acids and toxic substances. A thermochemical process has been developed for the combined utilization of gypsum and pyrite wastes by converting them into useful products such as lime, sulfur, and iron, as shown in Figure 1.

A simplified method for estimation of jarosite and acid-forming sulfates in acid mine wastes.
In acid base accounting (ABA) estimates of acid mine wastes, the acid potential (AP) estimate can be improved by using the net carbonate value (NCV) reactive sulfide S method rather than total S assay methods but this does not give recovery of potentially acid producing ferrous and ferric sulfates present in many wastes. For more accurate estimation of AP, an effective, site-specific method to ...

As one of the most environmentally friendly and cost-effective method, anaerobic digestion (AD) has been widely studied and developed as a conventional technology to degrade biodegradable materials and produce biogas simultaneously. Various substrate sources are used in this process such as organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW), waste activated sludge (WAS), animal manures, agro-indus...

U nless you hang drywall or travel in certain biogeochemical circles, the calcium sulfate mineral gypsum is probably not on your radar—nor is the amount of sulfate (SO4 2 ) dissolved in seawater, which determines how much gypsum is left behind when that seawater evaporates. All the same, sulfate is the second most abundant negatively charged ion dissolved in seawater today, and tracking its cha...

Gypsiferous soils, as the most characteristic soil in arid and semi-arid regions, are widespread in Isfahan Province. The north-west region of Isfahan is a closed basin and is surrounded by geologic formations. This area is a part of Zayandehrood watershed. The origin of gypsum in this area was investigated in this study. Considering the geologic distribution of gypsum, twenty-two locations, su...
